In hypotherapy we find the pasive and active hypotherapy. In the first one the rider usually rides with a blanket and will adapt to the horse movement, taking advantage of body temperature, rythm impulse and the three- dimensional locomotive pattern of the horse. Horse is guided by a leader and accompanied by the instructor and one assistent/volunteer and the work they do is only at walk pace.
In the active hypotherapy, we add neuromuscular exercises that will stimulate the muscle tone, psychomotor coordination, the body symmetry and balance. The rider doesnt control the horse yet so he cant ride it independantly on the arena, so he must be always guided by an instructor and one or two assitants or volunteers. Usually he rides only with a blanket, no saddle, and sessions last 30 minutes.
Therapeutic riding unifies the aim of the therapy to the teaching of the sport itself. As well as gymnastic and neuromuscular exercises combined with games, the rider learns how to ride, he "upgrades" to an active rider that interacts with the horse. The rider "moves" the horse and rides with a saddle and safety stirrups. The work is done at walk, trott and gallop; it depends on the riders level. Sessions last aproximately 40 minutes.
